Brand lift: how to know if your communication is truly shifting brand perception

Reach, views, and clicks tell you what people did in response to the ad. Brand lift shows what they started thinking after seeing it, and that's the feedback that leadership usually demands.

Every brand campaign ends in the same meeting. Reach hit the target, views came in, cost per click was within budget. Then someone from management asks: "But did the brand get stronger?" And the room falls silent.

The silence has an explanation. The metrics that the media delivers by default record behavior in response to the piece, not changes in perception. brand lift It exists to cover that gap. At Anacouto, we treat this analysis as part of brand management, not just another report at the end of the campaign: it's what shows whether the investment in communication is, in fact, building something that lasts.

What is brand lift?

Brand lift is the measurement of a campaign's effect on brand perception. Instead of counting clicks, it compares how two audiences respond to the same questions: those who were exposed to the communication and those who were not, or the same audience before and after the campaign. The difference between the responses is the lift, the increase that can be attributed to the communication.

The term became popular with digital media platforms. Google, for example, describes its Brand Lift solution as a way to measure ad effectiveness focusing on recall, recognition, and consideration, "instead of traditional metrics like clicks, impressions, or views." The logic, however, predates the platforms and applies to any medium: separating what the campaign caused from what would have happened anyway.

Why measure the brand lift of your campaigns?

A brand campaign isn't measured solely by clicks or immediate sales.

A brand campaign works on memory, association, and preference. These are effects that mature over months, while the click happens in seconds. When only the short term is measured, the conclusion is almost always the same: the activation "works" and the brand building "doesn't yield a return.".

Les Binet and Peter Field demonstrated the cost of this bias in The Long and the Short of It, A study published by the IPA, based on 996 campaigns entered in the IPA Effectiveness Awards between 1980 and 2010, shows that business effects grow as the campaign extends over time, and the most efficient balance between brand building and sales activation is around 60/40. Those who only measure the immediate response see only half the result.

Investing in media without a clear impact on the brand.

Without a perception analysis, the media plan is optimized based on what's available: cost per thousand, view rate, click-through rate. The risk is rewarding the cheapest ad to deliver, not the one that most effectively drives the brand. brand lift research Return to the question that justified the investment: did this communication increase the brand recall, Consideration, the intention behind the choice?

Aligning marketing and leadership around results.

Lift is a number that leadership understands. “Consideration rose six points among those who saw the campaign” is a phrase that fits in a board meeting, unlike a panel with twenty media metrics. When marketing and management look at the same indicator, the conversation stops being about spending and starts being about... campaign effectiveness.

What indicators does brand lift track?

The indicators follow the logic of the brand funnel, from initial contact to decision.

Remembrance and recognition

This is the first layer: does the person remember seeing the campaign? Do they spontaneously recall the brand when thinking about the category? Do they recognize the brand when it is presented? Without recall, no other effect holds up.

Brand associations

Here the question changes from "Do you remember?" to "How do you remember?". The study verifies whether the public has come to associate the brand with the attributes that the campaign intended to build, such as innovation, proximity, or quality. It is the indicator that connects the campaign to its positioning.

Consideration

A brand consideration It measures whether the brand has made it onto the list of options the person would consider for their next purchase. It tends to be the most sensitive indicator for well-known brands that are not yet being chosen.

Intention to purchase or contract

This is the closest thing to a real deal: the stated willingness to buy, hire, or recommend. It's important to remember that this is an intention, not a completed sale, and that it needs to be interpreted in conjunction with commercial data.

How does a brand lift survey work?

One brand lift study It follows four steps.

The first step is to define the question. What should the campaign change? A study that measures everything ends up answering nothing. The communication objective determines which indicators are included in the questionnaire.

The second step is to form the groups. In the most robust design, a group exposed to the campaign is compared to a control group with the same profile, which was not impacted. When the campaign has too broad a coverage to guarantee a clean control, the alternative is before-and-after research, with equivalent samples in each wave.

The third is to analyze the variation. If the control group's index is 30%, considering the brand, and among those exposed, the index is 36%, the absolute lift is six percentage points and the relative lift is 20%. The example is illustrative, but it shows the reasoning. The analysis also verifies whether the difference is statistically significant or if it falls within the margin of error.

The fourth is the report. A good report doesn't stop at the numbers. It shows which audiences, pieces, and channels had the greatest impact, and what that suggests for the next wave.

Brand lift vs. performance metrics: what does each one tell you?

Performance metrics answer the question "what did people do?": click, register, buy. They are continuous, fast, and great for optimizing day-to-day operations.

Brand lift answers another question: "what has changed in people's minds?". It is sample-based, specific, and geared towards effects that take time to appear in the cash register.

One analysis doesn't replace the other. Performance without brand analysis tends to deplete existing demand. A brand without performance analysis loses its connection to sales. The good branding measurement Place them both side by side and respect each one's timeframe.

What brand lift doesn't show

Brand lift measures the effect of a campaign. It does not measure the strength of the brand as a whole.

A high lift can originate from a low base. A campaign can increase brand awareness of an attribute that doesn't differentiate the brand from anyone else. And a good result in a wave doesn't tell you whether the brand is gaining or losing ground to the competition over the years.

Therefore, the lift needs context. The question before "did the campaign work?" is "what did it work to build?". This answer comes from... strategic branding And positioning: these are what define which associations the brand needs to acquire, and it is against this criterion that the lift should be interpreted. Without it, the company risks celebrating the movement of an indicator that doesn't take the brand anywhere.

How does Anacouto connect brand strategy and results measurement?

At Anacouto, measurement begins before the campaign. The Branding Platform defines what the brand is and what it needs to represent in order to grow. Communication translates this definition into a narrative. And measurement verifies whether the perception has moved in the planned direction.

A recent example is the campaign. Technology at your own pace., This is the campaign we created for Intelbras. With 50 years of history, the company had a brand objective, not an immediate conversion goal: to accelerate recognition and bring the end consumer closer to a broad portfolio of technology solutions. The answer was a concept about different rhythms of life, a 60-second film, and a soundtrack that recreates "Take On Me" with sounds from the products themselves, broadcast on open and closed TV and in out-of-home media at airports. It's the type of communication that can only be fairly evaluated by perception indicators: recognition, association with the portfolio, consideration.

To continuously monitor these indicators, we rely on Valometry®, a branding management tool from the Anacouto ecosystem. It combines brand tracking and campaign performance evaluation, translating brand strength into a Branding Value Score (BVS) compared to the category. Thus, the effect of each campaign ceases to be an isolated snapshot and becomes part of the overall brand perception over time.

Campaigns drive perception. Consistent perception builds a brand. A strong brand sustains growth.
